• Furniture store brings thousands of jobs to The Colony

The country's largest home furnishing store is making North Texas its home, and it's already begun rolling out the welcome mat.

"They have come in [and] they have created jobs for us," said Mayor Joe McCourry on Tuesday.

McCourry said he's thrilled the Nebraska Furniture Mart-Texas is opening its megastore in The Colony this spring. The store just started its five-month long stocking process.

The 1.3 million-square foot distribution center sits at 5600 Nebraska Furniture Mart Drive near the intersection of Sam Rayburn Tollway and Plano Parkway.

"This is absolutely a destination to go and visit," McCourry said.

Eight-hundred people will soon hear "you're hired." That comes after 1,200 men and women already received that exciting news. Nebraska Furniture Mart-Texas will employ 2,000 employees, which is roughly half the size of the staff Toyota's bringing to Plano.

Workers at The Colony store are currently unpacking furniture, flooring, appliances and electronics. They're filling a massive warehouse that's more than 22 football fields in size.

"I think it's going to have tremendous benefits to The Colony not only jobs, but also revenue as well to the city [and] exposure to the city," said store director Edward Lipsett.

The entire area surrounding Nebraska Furniture Mart-Texas is undergoing major development. The mayor says easily 10,000 new jobs will be created.

The furniture store will start ringing up customers this spring as more businesses move in around the business. The city projects together they'll attract 50,000 visitors a week.

"We'll have visitors that come in that maybe don't get to DFW a lot," said Grandscape President Jeff Lind. "We need to have some brands that sound good to them [and] some brands that they recognize and will appeal to their pocket books," he continued.

Lind is overseeing the more than $1-billion development. He's made a major announcement Tuesday about several other neighbors moving into The Colony, including a convention center hotel and spa, specialty restaurants, an outdoor amphitheater and more. Anchoring it all is the mega furniture store.

"We're at that juncture where we're just excited," Lipsett said. "We're feeling closer to the start of the game so to speak and we're excited to get open."

Nebraska Furniture Mart-Texas is still hiring. It's offering are on-the-spot interviews for warehouse positions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Those who would like to apply can stop by the hiring center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Colony Square Shopping Center at 5201 South Colony Blvd Suite #799.
