Green roof is a very recent and unique concept in landscaping. In this concept, you can create a garden or create a green cover in your concrete space. One of the problems that today people are facing in setting up a green roof is that, many of the old buildings are not designed to bear extra load of a landscape setting. People are taking steps and measures to make the roof top stronger, so that a green roof can be created.
Basically there are three types of green gardens, they are mentioned and explained below:
1. Intensive gardens
Intensive gardens are the original type of green roof concept where an actual proper garden is constructed in the rooftops. Generally, these gardens have deep soil covering up to 20 cm or even higher. It requires a strong concrete base and a waterproof membrane, effective drainage layer and also a root barrier.
On top of this, sufficient amount of soil is poured so that the plants can grow. You can grow plants, trees, shrubs of any and every kind. They are pretty expensive because of their complicated settings and features. They require regular and intensive maintenance.
2. Extensive garden
Extensive gardens are better option for intensive gardens. They are specially designed for old buildings, which do not have the capacity to hold an intensive garden setting. The depth of the soil covering for this type of garden is from 5 - 20 cm only.
These gardens are suitable for both old designed buildings and newly designed buildings. Because of the limited level of soiling in these types of gardens, only few types of plants and trees are suitable for plantation. Vegetables and small shrubs are best suitable for extensive gardens. These types of gardens are the best choice for those who are looking for a garden setting, which is light on their pockets and are easily maintained.
3. Semi extensive gardens
Semi extensive garden is a proper proportion of extensive and intensive gardens. These types of gardens have a deeper growing medium than the extensive gardens. By this type of setting, you can plant more variety of plants and trees. At the same time, semi extensive gardens are setup in a way that they do not require much of maintenance.
Some of the designing aspects are mentioned and described below:
- Wall heights
The limit of the walls is 4 feet and anything more than this height looks too big and awkward. Walls heighted more than 4 feet are not suitable for good landscaping settings.
- Retaining walls
Walls measuring from 2-2.5 feet are best suitable for great seats. It will create an aesthetic appeal to your garden and it will be very comfortable for your use.
- Space for planting beds
If you are planning to plant, grass levels or some other small plants make sure you leave sufficient space for planting. 1.5 feet is sufficient for planting beds.
