5 Benefits of Tree Trimming and Pruning

Rate this Entry
Tree pruning and trimming is necessary for healthy foliage, even though a majority of property owners have difficultly with it. Aside from not being familiar with trees’ appearance, it may be hard to navigate the tricky process. However, there are many ways pruning and trimming can benefit your trees.

Your Tree Becomes Healthier

Since trimming and pruning eliminate dead or dying branches, the process can yield a healthy result for your trees. Additionally, some attention to your tree can improve its appearance and structure.

Pruning and trimming your trees make trees look healthy while keeping them from growing weak and broad branches. Damaged and dangerous branches are also being eliminated which reduces the likelihood that it could cause harm to your family or property. Tree care also prevents immediate decay and will improve the overall health of the tree.

Your Trees Grow in a Better Direction

Generally, there are two types of pruning cuts: heading cut and thinning cut. Heading cuts are basically done to decrease the height of the tree. To stimulate the growth of buds, gardeners cut the back lateral branches and terminal buds of the tree. The direction in which the remaining lateral bud is pointing determines the direction of the sprouts’ growth.

Meanwhile, thinning cuts remove branches directly where they are attached. Commonly, thinning involves pruning a branch back to another branch and a branch from the trunk. Instead of stimulating growth only in a few branches, thinning cuts instigates development throughout the tree.

You Improve the Appearance of Your Tree

There are four degrees of trimming a tree: fine pruning, standard pruning, hazard trimming and crown reduction trimming. Fine trimming allows the removal of small limbs and branches to enhance the overall look of a tree. Each have their own benefits.

Your Tree’s Branches Become Stronger

Standard pruning entails heavy cutting. This time, the purpose is to improve the tree’s branch structure while ensuring the growth of trees.

You Prevent Your Tree from Causing Hazards

Hazard and crown reduction trimming work to increase safety around trees by removing branches that could become weak and fall.

Hazard trimming reduces branches that are out of place or more than two inches in diameter. Meanwhile, major branches that cause interference with power lines are removed in crown reduction trimming. Trees that are damaged by storm or have experienced significant dieback also undergo crown reduction trimming to preserve their health and appearance.

These are just a handful of the many benefits of tree care. Even though pruning and trimming promote the health and aesthetic of your tree, it should be done so in moderation. Do not remove more than one-third of the tree’s crown. By following these tips, you can continue to have a beautiful tree for years to come.
