Counter stools, which save space by slotting under serving spaces, are becoming more popular as lives get busier and living spaces become smaller and more compact. But as demand grows, so to does Cymax’s extensive range, which might seem overwhelming at first. That’s why we have put together these helpful hints to make it easier for you to select counter stools that will be the right height and style for your home.

Sizes and types of counter stools

Counter stools are typically 24" to 27" in height (measured from seat to floor) and are intended for use with counters or counter height tables that are around 36” high – you always want at least 10” clearance between the top of the stool and the bottom of the table, to allow room for legs. Counter stools are typically used with kitchen islands, breakfast bars, kitchen counters and gathering tables.

Keep in mind that there is no industry standard for measuring or listing the height of a counter stool. Manufacturers generally measure the stool’s height in one of two ways: the distance from the seat to the floor or the distance from the top of the back of the chair to the floor. Be sure to check individual product descriptions. Make sure you also measure your own counter from the top to the floor. If the counter juts out, measure the counter's height to the bottom of the overhang.

Swivel counter stools are practical and convenient, especially if the younger members of the family will be using them on a regular basis. They allow freedom of movement while sitting to eat or socialize. Depending on the style, model and manufacturer, swivel mechanisms range from manual to gas or pneumatic cylinders to memory return.

Counter stools with back

Counter stools with backs resemble a standard dining room chair, but are typically six to eight inches higher. They are an ideal choice if you want to add comfortable seating to a dining area, living room, rec room, den or family room. They are also a good choice for young children, since the back will provide additional support, preventing them from tipping backwards.

Backless counter stools are often considered more aesthetically pleasing, since there is no seat back to obstruct the view of the stool's overall profile. They are ideal for spaces with plenty of leg room, but where an extended frame might interfere with the countertop edge – especially if it has a prominent overhang. They are also useful for dining spaces that are in main traffic areas, since the stools can be pushed out of the way underneath the counter or gathering table or home bar.

Adjustable height counter stools are especially useful if you want to move them from one area of your home to another for use with counters, bars and kitchen islands that vary in height. The average seat height adjustability ranges from 25" to 30", and depending on the brand and the model, this range can be greater or lesser.
