That horrible mark on your precious carpet looks dreadful. You may be thinking you need a magic spell to have the burn mark repaired. Not so, and certainly a lot easier to repair than to claim on your home and contents insurance. In many cases you’ll find that incidents and damages such as a burn caused to a carpet or other soft furnishing material in the home are exempt from claim. If you're in this situation right now, fear not because there is help at hand.

What can be done?

You could undertake a patch job on the affected area of the carpet if you have any off cuts left from the original installation of the carpet.

On the other hand, if you do have any off cuts remaining the carpet on show may have faded a little from exposure to ultra violet radiation and cleaning over time since it was first laid.

You could also spend an inordinate amount of time cutting out a patch from the off cuts, cutting out the burnt area of the carpet and trying to make an invisible match.

If it is a patterned carpet you may well have more of a job on your hands than you first thought. You'll also need the right tools for the job (Stanley knife, scissors, double sided adhesive tape and maybe suitable glue.

Claiming on your contents insurance

You can try this if you're not too squeamish. You have about as much chance of success as NASA has of repeating the moon landings of the 1960s and 1970s. Most insurance companies have a small print within the small print which exempts claims such as these.

Insurance companies are pretty devious with the small print. If you cannot repair neither can you afford (or want) to replace an entire carpet, there is an alternative.

Invisible carpet repair

A cigarette or iron burn on carpet fibres can be repaired, and a surprisingly invisible repair can be achieved if you have the right tools and the experience to carry the work out.

If the burn is on an area of the carpet which does not show, you may not have to carry out a repair. However, unless the iron or cigarette end which caused the burn in the first place rolled under the sofa or chair, the burn mark will be in full view of everyone. And do you have the experience, the knowledge or the tools to make an invisible repair?

If you don't have the necessary tools, or the experience to make an invisible mend you need an expert on your side. According to the website of The Carpet Surgeon they have the following to say on the subject:
…” a minor burn or scorch mark can be fully and seamlessly repaired in double quick time. Time and time again we are able to expedite seamless repairs”…

Companies such as these will visit your home or business premises, affect an invisible repair in double quick time and save you money in the process.

Now, are you ready to make that call to have a little TLC applied to your carpet?
