For over three quarters of a century, Fish Furniture has provided superior products, exceptional value and outstanding customer service, making Fish Furniture the first choice for fine home furnishings throughout greater Cleveland.

The thriving retailer had its genesis in 1925, when Seymour and Esther Fischgrund opened a small store on Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland. The store specialized in dinette and dining room furniture, and Mr. Fischgrund would stain or paint the furniture to order. Then Mrs. Fish, as she was affectionately known in the trade, would decorate it or stripe the seat backs and legs to match a color in their customer’s wallpaper.

During the Depression customers asked if they could buy the furniture unfinished so they could save money. So the store began stocking “raw” furniture, thus becoming the first retailer in the United States to specialize in this type of furniture.
After Mr. Fischgrund died in 1955, Al Geller, a young man who had been a salesman at the store until Uncle Sam called him to active Army duty during the Korean War, took over the reins of the company, which had just three employees. He made the decision to decrease the store’s inventory of unfinished furniture while significantly increasing its inventory of solid-wood, finished furniture. In 1960, ready to assemble finished furniture was introduced to the market. It was less expensive than unfinished furniture, therefore Geller discontinued the unfinished furniture department and concentrated instead on selling the finest SOLID WOOD home furnishings and upholstered furniture.

This strategy proved to be extremely successful and in 1963, Al Geller bought the company from Mrs. Fish. His wife Norma, worked alongside him as the bookkeeper, and they worked together to build up the business. In 1971, a 3,000-square-foot second location was opened in North Olmsted. Ten years later the downtown store was relocated to Mayfield Heights, and in 1986 their son Daniel joined the business. After the expansion of both stores in 1989 and the addition of a state-of-the-art warehouse in Bedford Heights, Fish Furniture now has more than 130,000 square feet of showroom and warehouse space and has 70 employees.
