Hi Joe - it's pretty simple: you design interiors! I think people assume this means just choosing wall colours and furniture... but actually a good designer will be qualified to work with architects from the floor up, including things like removing walls, installing kitchens, etc.
You will generally get 2 types of designer: the one who does commercial buildings (e.g deciding how to deck out a whole office block according to what the client wants) and the one who does residential (e.g making someone's family room look good).

There is also a degree called 'Interior Architecture' but I think that is more to with the structural/building side of things.

As far as I know, many Interior Designer's get work from clients based on the example of designs they have done shown in their portfolio, rather than necessarily having an official qualification. At least that's my plan, anyway!

Interior design is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive. Designs are created in response to and coordinated with the building shell and acknowledge the physical location and social context of the project.

Interior design is a discipline related to architecture that pertains to the layout, construction, and overall appeal of interior spaces such as rooms and offices. It is usually a blend of both aesthetic and technical elements. Wall placement, ceiling slope, and window size are some of the more architectural components, while flooring choices, carpeting color, and light fixture installment are some of the common artistic considerations. Most of the time, interior design work is undertaken by trained specialists who contract with either building managers or owners. It can happen either during initial construction or in the event of a remodel.

The same room can look completely different with each combination to satisfy the tastes of the room's occupants, and to provide the most functionality for their lifestyle.

Interior design often interconnect with the related field of interior decorating, though the two are usually considered separate discipline. Decorators work primarily with moveable fixtures like artwork, furniture, and color schemes to create a certain vibe within a space.
