What is the best way to "waterproof" a woodworking project?

Hi, I was planing to rebuild my dog's food and water bowl holder. I was wonder if anyone knows a cheap and easy way to waterproof it. To prevent bad thing happening to it. I plan to keep the same design. I was thinking to put metal plating around the bowls. So, thanks for the help.
