• JCPenney is ditching appliances and most furniture from its stores

J.C. Penney is ditching most appliances and furniture as the retailer seeks stability amid trauma for department stores.

The company announced Wednesday that it would cease sales of "major" appliances as of Feb. 28. It will stop selling furniture in stores, except some locations in Puerto Rico, though it will be available online and mattresses will be sold in more than 450 stores.

Previous CEO Marvin Ellison re-introduced appliances to J.C. Penney stores about three years ago in an attempt to capitalize on the struggles of rival Sears.

But the items didn't fit with the retailer's identity and are not typically very profitable.

The move comes as J.C. Penney is expected to close some stores and redesign its locations under new CEO Jill Soltau.

"While configurations vary by store, we are finalizing new layout options, including the reduction of store space previously dedicated to appliance and furniture showrooms to maximize efficiencies, reduce inventory and create an enhanced shopping experience that inspires repeat shopping trips," the company said in a blog post.

The move will help J.C. Penney focus on apparel and soft home furnishings, which it said are more profitable and popular with the company's customers.

The company said all warranties tied to past purchases will continue to be honored.
