ID:	10871We take extra precautions to secure your vehicles with care in a closed garage, and garage openers are definitely must-have accessories that make our life so much easier.

Garage door openers are usually provided with an emergency release lever, which is mostly overlooked when you experience power cut and can't open the garage door automatically. In this situation, you need to pull the lever down and raise the door manually to open the door.

The same lever can be used to get into the house if by any chance you locked yourself out. By using the clothes hanger to pull the lever inside, you can lift the door easily. Unfortunately, anyone can do the same thing to get into the house easily, and that is what lead to think twice about the garage security.

Here are some ideas that will make this easy access harder and increase the garage security. Ultimately, no one wants to risk their safety, which is why we have compiled the list that you should know about the garage openers. But, remember this that these methods can only be applied to garages and garage door openers.

1. Deactivate the emergency release lever - By disabling the emergency lever, there is no chance of getting someone into your house. However, you also will not be able to get in this way yourself.

2. Cord removal - The cord connected to the emergency release lever offers a minor convenience if you need to trip the lever. Once the cord is removed, it becomes almost impossible to grab onto from outside using a clothes hanger.

3. Cover the Windows - With a clear window, you can see what you are doing which makes it easy to use a clothes hanger to trip the emergency release lever. Without a clear window or with the frosted window, it takes more effort and time. So, make sure to cover the windows for the complete safety of garage.

4. Say bye to automatic garage opener - Opting for an old day's manual method to open the door will get you garage safety. For that, you need to disconnect the garage opener and use a manual latch to lock the door. Which means you have to unlock the door and lift it yourself and someone without the key will not be able to do the same.

5. Install a wireless keypad - Wireless keypad is a great addition if you want to eliminate all the hassle of searching for a remote or if you locked out of the house. It is cost-efficient and easy to install, you just only have to program the keypad with your code and all set. To open the door, lift the cover and enter the code, much simpler than a clothes hanger, besides who do not have the code. Moreover, with a wireless keypad, disabling emergency lever gets more comfortable.

6. Install motion sensor lights - The garage door can be dangerous if it doesn’t have motion sensors, which detects the object when they pass under the door. Consider installing one or two motion sensor lights over your garage door as it will eliminate the chances of a night time break in through the garage.

7. Secure the entry door to the house - Some people assume that the garage door provides all the security, which is why they do not have the lock on the door that directs from the garage into the house. It is better to have a good deadbolt lock on the door because if someone attempts to get into the garage, will have trouble getting into the house. Therefore, secure this door as you do for the other all exterior entry doors.

8. Avoid leaving the garage door remote in the car - Leaving the garage door remote in the car is an invitation for someone thinking about breaking into your house. If in case you do leave it in the car, make certain the doors should be locked and the remote shouldn't be visible from outside. The best way to keep the remote with you is to use an electric garage door, as most door openers come with the small miniature remote that you can fit your keychain.

9. Switch off the power - Your garage door opener will not work without electricity. So, when you are out of town or at night you can simply turn off the power by unplugging the opener or by flipping the switch (if the opener is wired to a wall switch). If you are using electric garage doors, it has certain settings, which ensure the door is completely locked for the duration of your absence.
