Renting A Storage Unit: What You Need to Know

Rate this Entry
Renting a storage unit is a great way to save space for all your belongings. Whether you need it for business or for personal use, a storage unit can keep all your belongings safe and sound.

There are, however, many things to consider before you start renting a storage unit – what kind of unit you need, how much it costs, and how secure it is, among other things. Here’s a few tips from us that can help you, especially for first-time renters.

Determine exactly how much you need to store

It may seem like a simple task, but most people either overestimate or underestimate just how much storage they need. Always maximize the space you’re renting to make sure you’re getting the most out of what you’re paying. Figure out from the start if you’ll need a climate-controlled unit or not based on the items you’ll be storing, but be prepared to pay extra if you do. Determining how much you need to store will not only help you save money, but also help you in making sure your belongings are stored safely in the unit to avoid breakages.

Choose the type of moving service you need

There are two kinds of storage units: a full-service storage and a self-storage. A full-service storage includes a “valet-style” service, meaning that movers will pick up your belongings and deliver them to the storage unit. A self-storage is the most popular choice, where you’ll have to deliver your items to the storage unit yourself. There are pros and cons to each service, so you need to determine which one is the most convenient and secure for you.

Figure out what kind of access you need

Some units are available to you 24/7 while some require an appointment to be accessed. While having an always available unit is convenient, units that require appointments guarantee security that less people are wandering near where your storage unit is located. With this, it’s also best to ask what kind of security measures are being taken to make sure your belongings are safe.

Be clear about fees

Make sure the facility is clear about the fees you need to pay. Ask about administration fees, security deposits, and refundable payments. One of the most important things you can ask them is the penalties for late or missed payments and cancellation fees should you cancel the rental contract early. To make sure you avoid late payments, ask the company if they allow automatic payments from your credit card or bank account.

Choose the right storage company

Most companies will pressure you with high-sales tactics so don’t be swayed. Make sure that the company you’ll be signing with is appropriately insured, licensed, and bonded. Read customer reviews on trusted websites and forums – remember to keep your options open and not just settle for the first company you see. If you’re still unsure about a company, ask them if they can put a space on hold for you while you browse through your options.
