Traditional crafts in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, have their origins in the Heian period (794-1185),
when residents fashioned garments and daily necessities for people in the imperial court.
Many place names in Kyoto are related to traditional crafts, as centuries of craftsmen actively nurtured a special local culture. Kyoto crafts have also played an important role in developing aspects of traditional culture such as the tea ceremony and the custom of visiting shrines and temples. Over the last 1200 years, this fertile ground has helped to produce countless dedicated craftsmen whose variety of handiworks fill Kyoto residents with pride.
Since it was established ninety years ago, Takaoka has been intimately involved with Kyoto people’s daily lives through
hand-sewn zabuton, or floor cushions. Now at the dawn of the twenty-first century, Japanese people are reassessing their lifestyle, which has been heavily influenced by the West. We are asking ourselves this question: what is a truly comfortable and richly appealing lifestyle for us?
To answer this question, the brand “Takaoka” offers an updated version of classic Japanese style, drawing on the skills and traditions unique to Kyoto.
For over ninety years, Takaoka has been intimately involved with Kyoto people’s daily lives through our hand-sewn zabuton,
or floor cushions. Our brand “Takaokaya” offers an array of items in an updated version of classic Japanese style.
Located at the intersection of Gojo Street and Aburanokoji Avenue, our store is located in the heart of Kyoto.
Takaoka was founded in 1919 as a processing plant for futon (Japanese-style bedding) sold at a Kyoto department store.
Back then, futon were commonly sold alongside kimono and, like kimono, were custom-made from fabric selected by the consumer. Kyoto people greatly appreciated the convenience of being able to purchase readymade futon.
Since that time, Takaoka has continued to produce handcrafted futon and zabuton in our own craft center.
Our products are available at fine department stores nationwide and may also be purchased over the Internet.
