Families like yours have been buying furnishings from the McGregor family since 1896. McGregors, Iowa's oldest family-owned furniture store, began in 1896, when James R. McGregor and a partner opened Stull & McGregor, in Oskaloosa. This first store sold furniture, carpet and caskets. Caskets were a common commodity in furniture stores in those days.

The store was destroyed by fire in 1904. The partners divided the assets and McGregor rebuilt the store the following year. The new store opened under the new name - McGregors. In 1912, McGregors moved into a new, three-story building on West High Avenue. In 2002 the store moved to the west end of Penn Central Mall.

James' sons James Jr. and Charles (C.D.) joined the family business in the early 1920s. In 1928, Charles moved to Marshalltown and opened McGregors' second store on Main Street there.

Over the years, McGregors has welcomed additional locations to its family of stores: Ottumwa (1945), Waterloo (1946), Mason City (1963), Fort Dodge (1974), Coralville (1987) and West Burlington (1996). In 2000, the Coralville store was converted into a combination McGregors/Kenwood House gallery.

Today, Marshalltown is home to McGregors' corporate headquarters. Head of operations are president James R. McGregor III, and C.D. McGregor's son, vice-president Robert S. McGregor.

In addition, two daughters of James R. McGregor III work for the company; Erin McGregor, chief financial officer and Chris McGregor, company advertising spokesperson.

Since opening its first store in 1896, McGregors has expanded to seven stores with delivery to Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, and of course, Iowa. That rich history of serving you ensures that, like in the past, the McGregor family will be here to serve your family, now and well into the future.
