The history of Libby’s Torrington Furniture Company began 83 years ago on Water Street. In 1928, David Libby and his partner, opened The Torrington Bedding Company to make and renovate mattresses. They moved the business to a larger store on Water Street in 1935 and expanded the business to furniture sales and discontinued the mattress making aspect. They expanded the store in 1948, and in 1950, David Libby bought out his partner.

In 1968, Libby’s Torrington Furniture Company moved to our present location at 104 Main Street and David’s son, Jerry, joined the business. Just one year later, Harry joined his father and brother in the business. The father and two sons worked side by side, growing the business together until David Libby retired in 1978, the year of the company’s 50th Anniversary.

The company has continued to flourish in downtown Torrington and built its reputation on its commitment to quality products and excellent customer service. Jessica (the youngest of David’s grandchildren) joined the family business in 2005, representing the family’s third generation. Now, in 2011, Libby’s Torrington Furniture Company is proud to celebrate it’s 83rd year in business.
