Located on Route 22 in Union, Berkshire Furniture is one of New Jersey’s oldest furniture stores. Originally named Bernstein Furniture, Solomon Bernstein opened the first store in 1903 on Springfield Avenue in Newark. Solomon’s son, Leo, moved the business to South Orange, changing the name as he did so. In 1953, Lawrence and Harold Bernstein joined Leo, and the three decided to move the thriving business to another South Orange location on Valley Street. Eric Bernstein, son of Lawrence, joined the business in 1991, and convinced his father to move the store to its current location in Union.
Lawrence and Eric continue to work as a team, so day-to-day operations run as smoothly for the fourth generation of furniture dealers as they did for Solomon more than one hundred years ago.
