A Scandinavian Inspired Design for a Child's Room

Rate this Entry

Not everybody can be Prince William and Princess Kate, but us mortals sometimes have little bundles of joy, too. As soon as our little princes and princesses are announced, an organized parent gets busy with making them a safe and special place and a secure and loving environment to grow up in. The future living space of your child is important, and it should be decorated with love and care.

The interior of your child’s room should have a warm and cozy atmosphere and provide some peace and serenity that both you and the child can feel, and this is the most important with a baby’s nurseries, where weary parents watch over their sweethearts for the larger part of the day. According to the latest trends, the minimalistic yet dreamy Scandinavian style is what you should be following.

A Nordic Nursery

Minimalism will be a leading home décor style for as long as Apple is in charge of electronic – clean design is timeless. Scandinavian design is minimalistic, with an accent is on natural elements. As this is a child’s room, wooden is the furniture, wooden are the toys. Natural wooden details that do not come with sharp edges is what makes Scandinavian minimalism so special. Wooden tones are warm and homey, cozy and comfortable.

If you opt for this decoration style, be ready to buy wooden furniture and a lot of fun wooden details for your child’s room. The advantage of getting handmade details made of high quality wood is that they are natural and without toxic chemicals – something you will be grateful for when the child enters its oral phase. Safe and snug as a toxin-free bug, isn’t that a good parenting phrase to live by?

Natural and neutral, these are the imperatives of Scandinavian style. The natural color of wood is an excellent and easy choice, but neutral colors and non-colors like black, grey and white can be used as well. This way, you achieve a completely calming, relaxing and natural effect in your interior design.

Personalize the room by painting the walls in some pastel colors, as is common with nurseries. It could be a nice contrast to the neutral and natural wooden elements. Fabrics and textiles with fun prints and some colorful details could also be a contrast to the monochromatic basics. This is a no-brainer, but nurseries have to be equipped with natural textiles like cotton.

Fun and Fancy Wooden Detailing

The main and most important piece of furniture in your baby’s nursery room should definitely be the crib. It should be made of natural, high quality wood and, if you can get a handmade one, or if you have one that has been running around the family, these are the best in quality.

The colors that are in as far as the Nordic style is concerned are just plain, bare wood coated with wood varnish, so it looks really natural but still draws attention. The other popular crib color is pure white. If your crib is painted white it can be combined with any other color and with any other detail.

Wooden chairs, closets and shelves for children books and toys are just going to complete this rustic wooden nursery story. Just make the white opaque, and stay away from going too whimsical, to avoid the shabby chic style which is very cute and appropriate for a nursery, but it clashes horribly with Scandinavian.

Wooden picture frames and ornaments for walls with interesting and cute messages and puns like “Dream big, little one” or “Goodnight deer”, silhouettes of lambs and swallows, these are all original and cute finishing touches.
