Having a well-maintained lawn does not need to be expensive. Neither does it need to be wasteful of water. By doing the right research and investing in new technology, you can save water and also reduce expenditures. Here are some tips on how to save water when watering the lawn.

Know what type of grass and soil you have.

There are types of grass that do not need to be watered every day. Certain types can survive for at least a month before they show signs of getting dry. Knowing what type of soil you have will also be helpful. Some types of soil make it difficult for the roots to absorb water.

Check the weather.

Do not water your lawn if it is expected to rain. Watering the lawn when it is expected to rain is a waste of water. Besides, overwatering your lawn would lead to drowning the roots of your grass.

Avoid watering the lawn on windy days as evaporation rate is higher during these days.
Gather rainwater.

When it is raining a lot, you can gather rainwater in a big water barrel. Once your lawn starts to show signs of drying up, you can use the rainwater to water your lawn and your other plants. Just make sure that the water barrel has a lid so that mosquitoes will not breed in it.
Water when it’s cooler early morning or late afternoon.

It is better to water your lawn early in the morning or late afternoon. When you water your lawn when the sun is high up in the sky, the rate of evaporation is higher, which leads to using more water for your plants.

Hand-water.

Instead of using sprinklers, it is best to hand-water your lawn. Some parts of sprinklers water the pavement and not the lawn. With hand-watering, you have more control on where the water goes.

You can use a water hose with a squeeze spray nozzle so that the water would not be left running. The spray feature would distribute water in a larger area, so the water will not be too concentrated. This will help you save water and avoid the tendency for your lawn’s roots to drown.

Do not cut the lawn too short.

Cutting the lawn too short would also increase the evaporation rate. You can raise the setting of your lawn mower one step higher. Also make sure that your lawn mower is sharp so that the grass would not be stressed.

If you follow all of these tips, you will notice the difference in your water bill. Besides saving money, you also help preserve Mother Earth by saving water. Start researching and investing in water-saving materials today.
